Travel repeatedly challenges me to step further out of my comfort zone: whether it is venturing into a new place, or stepping into a new experience; I’m not unafraid, but I have used this muscle enough to trust it.

I want my child to see that it’s okay to fail, but you must take the first step to start the journey. Wherever the journey may lead, to live life loud takes courage. And life is just too amazing not to take that first step.

My guy took his first solo flight ✈️ and this proud Mama survived it! Thank you to @southwestair for taking such good care of this precious cargo!

In all honesty, this guy was more than ready. With over 400 flights to date, he definitely knows his way around an airport. I just needed to trust that all the training I have given would serve him well. I can’t lie though, it’s still a little scary as a parent to cut the cord.

Some tips and recommendations for a kid’s first solo flight:

🧳 Pick a shorter direct trip, preferably leaving earlier in the day. We were very fortunate that this route was one we have done together many times and we had lots of choices for departures.

🧳 If the child is officially flying as an unaccompanied minor, you will pay an extra fee. This allows the parent or guardian to accompany the minor to the gate, but you have to get a special pass. They will be accompanied through the jetbridge by the gate agent and the child will be released only to an approved adult at the other end.

🧳 Give yourself plenty of time to check in at the ticket desk and get through security together.

🧳 Fill a water bottle once you get through security (especially since short flights may not serve drinks more than once).

🧳 Make sure your little one has ample snacks. My guy is a snack-consuming-machine and I know that even on a short flight, he will burn through it all.

🧳 Fully charged device to keep him occupied.

- Their trunks are actually considered an organ and have crazy skills!
- They are distantly related to manatees - crazy!
- Many cultures believe that an elephant with a trunk raised upwards is a sign of good luck
- It is estimated that there are only about 50,000 elephants left in the wild, worldwide.

"UNDERWATER WATERFALL" - what?!
This natural wonder can only be seen from the air. Here's how to plan your experience!

We had the best time with @corailhelicomu Helicopters, who offer several different tour options and price points to see the natural beauty of Mauritius. We chose the 45 minute flight to see the "Underwater Waterfall" plus gorgeous views of the famous #blackrivergorge #tamarindfalls , coastlines, and the capital city, #portlouis. This tour really gives you an appreciation for the natural landscapes of Mauritius, you will get extraordinary aerial views of almost the whole place - well worth the price tag!

The "Underwater Waterfall" is actually an optical illusion caused as the currents push shifting sand and silt into the ocean shelf on which Mauritius sits. Your pilot will maneuver the helicopter to be sure both sides see this phenomenon and take great pictures.

🚁 Seating in the helicopter is arranged based on weight for safety reasons.
🚁 Bring a cell phone or small camera but other loose items will be secured in a locker at the Corail office.

Be sure to book your flight well in advance - trips to see this natural wonder are one of the most popular activities in Mauritius and sell out fast!

🇲🇺 MAURITIUS IS A FOODIE DREAM!! 🍍
One of our favorite things to do when we arrive somewhere new is to get out and do a local food tour. This helps us get acquainted with ingredients and local dishes to order in restaurants, and usually doubles as a history lesson with cultural context.
Our tour with @tastebuddiesmauritius did not disappoint! We visited multiple hawker stalls, eateries steeped in multi-generational history, and closed out the tour by adventuring through the Central Market.
Tasting your way through Port Louis, you'll recognize familiar dishes from Indian, Southeast Asian, East African, Creole, French and even Chinese menus .... but all have their own unique Mauritian twist, infusing local flavors and ingredients.

INSIDER TIP: Don't eat before you go on your tour! 🤣

My guy took his first solo flight ✈️ and this proud Mama survived it! Thank you to @southwestair for taking such good care of this precious cargo! In all honesty, this guy was more than ready. With over 400 flights to date, he definitely knows his way around an airport. I just needed to trust that all the training I have given would serve him well. I can’t lie though, it’s still a little scary as a parent to cut the cord. Some tips and recommendations for a kid’s first solo flight: 🧳 Pick a shorter direct trip, preferably leaving earlier in the day. We were very fortunate that this route was one we have done together many times and we had lots of choices for departures. 🧳 If the child is officially flying as an unaccompanied minor, you will pay an extra fee. This allows the parent or guardian to accompany the minor to the gate, but you have to get a special pass. They will be accompanied through the jetbridge by the gate agent and the child will be released only to an approved adult at the other end. 🧳 Give yourself plenty of time to check in at the ticket desk and get through security together. 🧳 Fill a water bottle once you get through security (especially since short flights may not serve drinks more than once). 🧳 Make sure your little one has ample snacks. My guy is a snack-consuming-machine and I know that even on a short flight, he will burn through it all. 🧳 Fully charged device to keep him occupied. TELL ME, PARENTS! We had the best time with @corailhelicomu Helicopters, who offer several different tour options and price points to see the natural beauty of Mauritius. We chose the 45 minute flight to see the "Underwater Waterfall" plus gorgeous views of the famous #blackrivergorge #tamarindfalls , coastlines, and the capital city, #portlouis. This tour really gives you an appreciation for the natural landscapes of Mauritius, you will get extraordinary aerial views of almost the whole place - well worth the price tag! The "Underwater Waterfall" is actually an optical illusion caused as the currents push shifting sand and silt into the ocean shelf on which Mauritius sits.
