I expected Essaouira’s medina, fresh seafood, and Atlantic coastline to stand out during our Morocco trip; after time in the Sahara desert, the cool ocean breeze was a welcome respite from the hot sand dunes. However, I did not expect beginner surf lessons in Essaouira to become an experience we would talk about long after we left.
Somewhere between wiping out in the waves, laughing through failed attempts, and finally watching my son stand up on the board for the first time, this became much more than just another excursion. Trying a new skill is adventure travel at its finest, and after much research, I was delighted to find the best surf school in town to literally dip our toes into the sport.

Essaouira is a historic port city on Morocco’s western Atlantic coast. It’s about a 2.5- to 3-hour drive west of Marrakesh. Most visitors reach Essaouira by car or bus. It’s a popular addition to a Morocco itinerary after spending time in the bustling cities of Marrakesh, Fes, or Casablanca.
Known for its picturesque medina, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Essaouira is often referred to as Morocco’s “Windy City”. The expansive coastline makes it a highly sought-after destination for water sports such as windsurfing, surfing, and kitesurfing.
Even if watersports are the main attraction for you, you can ride a camel along the beach or wander the medina full of unique handicrafts and artisans. Essaouira is one of the most family-friendly destinations in Morocco. And if you’re traveling with teenagers, a surf lesson is one of the best ways to experience the city’s adventurous side.
What makes Essaouira perfect for a beginner surf lesson?
Essaouira has long been known as one of Morocco’s surf towns, but what makes it especially appealing is that the beach and shoreline topography are ideal for beginners.
Unlike some surf destinations that cater mostly to experienced surfers chasing huge waves, Essaouira’s long sandy beaches are met with relatively small rolling waves during much of the year. There is limited, if any, undertow, and there are no hidden rocky patches beneath the surface. Additionally, the town has an overall relaxed surf culture that feels welcoming rather than intimidating or exclusive.
For parents traveling with older kids or teens, finding activities like this surf lesson that feel exciting and cool to teenagers is an absolute win, and it’s a great memory-making experience you can share together.
Our personal experience taking a private surf lesson in Essaouira
Our hotel was located in the medina, the fortified old city of Essaouira, and an easy 20-minute walk from our surf shop along the beachfront. We arrived at our surf store excited and a little nervous. The instructors at the shop were kind, relaxed, and happy to answer any questions we had. We got fitted with wetsuits at their store (included in the cost of the lesson), then sized up for a board based on our height, and off we headed to the beach!
Neither of us had previous surfing experience, and while it always looks effortless in photos, the reality is a lot more humbling when you first step into the water carrying a board that suddenly feels much larger than expected. However, the instructor immediately made the experience feel approachable and achievable.
We started with some light stretching, and then, before we even entered the water, we began our training on our boards on the beach. Our instructor walked us through how to position ourselves on the board, when to paddle, how to pop up, and how to fall safely.
What I appreciated most was that the atmosphere never felt overly serious or intimidating. The private instruction lesson was ideal and personal. It felt encouraging, relaxed, supportive, and genuinely fun, which is exactly what you want when trying something completely new.
And while there were plenty of wipeouts during our two-hour lesson, there was also something incredibly rewarding about watching my son keep trying, wave after wave, until he finally managed to stand. That moment alone made the experience worth it. That magical moment when you can see your child’s self-pride and confidence grow a little, those are the priceless memories.
Traveling with teenagers can sometimes mean searching for experiences that genuinely engage them beyond “another sightseeing stop.” This did exactly that. It was active, challenging, funny, memorable, and completely different from anything we normally do at home (plus we live in a landlocked location with no surf!).
What to expect during a surf lesson in Essaouira
How long does the lesson last?
Most beginner lessons last around two hours. We personally felt this was the perfect amount of time for us as first-timers. It was long enough to learn the basics and spend meaningful time in the water without becoming completely exhausted.
What equipment is included?
The surf school provided:
- surfboards
- wetsuits
- one-on-one instruction
- a towel and access to a shower after the lesson
This makes it very easy for travelers since you do not need to bring any gear yourself. We were also provided a locker on-site at the shop to safely leave any personal items, including phones and hotel keys, before heading to the beach.
What about safety and instruction?
Before entering the water, instructors reviewed:
- ocean safety
- wave timing
- how to stand
- and how to safely fall from the board.
For us as beginners, this helped reduce the initial nervousness. As a mom, this was of great importance and gave me a lot of confidence in the instructors’ professionalism and attentiveness.
As a point of note, we both have strong swimming skills and experience in the ocean. I personally think you should have basic swimming skills to participate in this lesson. I don’t think age makes as much of a difference as water confidence. However, during the lesson, he and the instructor did not go out to water that was much over my son’s head.
What should you pack and bring for a surf lesson in Essaouira?
Through our personal experience, we learned that you do not need much for a beginner surf lesson, but a few things will make the experience easier:
- Swimsuit
- Sunscreen
- Bottle of water
- Flip flops or sandals
- Dry clothes for afterward
The surf school provides wetsuits and boards.
I would suggest designating a family member or friend to take photos, if possible; I do not recommend leaving a camera unattended on the beach if you are also participating in the lesson.
When is the best time of year for surf lessons in Essaouira?
One of the nice things about Essaouira is that surfing is possible year-round.
Summer (June) and early fall (September) are often the most ideal for beginners because the waves tend to be smaller and more manageable.
Winter (December) can bring slightly larger swells that are better suited for more experienced surfers.
Even if surfing is not the main purpose of your trip to Morocco, adding a lesson while visiting Essaouira is absolutely worth considering at any time of year.

What about water temps and seasonality?
Depending on the season, the Atlantic water around Essaouira can feel cooler than many travelers expect in Morocco, especially compared to the inland heat of Marrakech. The wetsuits definitely helped make the lesson more comfortable.
We had our lesson first thing in the morning (10 am) in July. The air temperature was mild (70 degrees Fahrenheit), and the water was refreshing. By the time our lesson had finished at noon, temperatures were heating up, and the cooler breeze was welcome! Temperatures in Essaouira reached around 80 degrees Fahrenheit at their peak.
Final Thoughts: The Tour You Shouldn’t Skip in Essaouira
If you are debating whether a surf lesson in Essaouira is worth booking, I would absolutely say YES! This ended up being far more than just a tourist activity. It became one of the most memorable experiences of our trip to Morocco. The lesson was perfect in length, leaving us the rest of our day for more exploring and activities.
For families, adventurous travelers, or complete beginners looking to try something new, surf lessons in Essaouira are among the best ways to experience Morocco’s Atlantic coast in a more active and meaningful way.
